I want a girl with extensions in her hair
Bamboo earrings, at least two pair
A Fendi bag and a bad attitude
That’s all I need to get me in a good mood
She can walk with a switch and talk with street slang
I love it when a woman ain’t scared to do her thing
Standing at the bus stop sucking on a lollipop
Once she gets pumping its hard to make the hottie stop
She likes to dance to the rap jams
She sweet as brown sugar with the candied yams
Honey coated complexion, using Camay
Lets hear it for the girl, she’s from around the wayexcerpt from LL Cool J. “Around The Way Girl”
I remember when I was younger listening to, “Around The Way Girl” and thinking to myself, “yeah… that’s what I want.” Fast-forward to 2018 and things have most definitely changed. The girl next door is becoming extinct, and we need to bring her back.
What’s An, “Around The Way Girl?”
This one is pretty easy.
- Laid Back
- Relaxed (not uptight)
- Chill
- Very easy to talk to
- Always down to do whatever comes to mind
- Doesn’t mind getting dirty
- Non-judgemental
- Loyal
- Dedicated
- Your Best Friend
- Low maintenance
In my post about Teen dating, I talked about how I missed the way things used to be. The innocence of it all. The days when we didn’t gravitate towards the material and superficial as much. We were more focused on each other. Having fun, laughing, (and who was going to fall asleep first) while on the phone, were our only concerns. That was immaculate love… and honestly—I personally haven’t had a love like that since I was a teenager. Everything seems to come with conditions, high standards, and expected levels of monetary treatment.
The girl next door was the one who you could take out for fries and burger, and she’d be more interested in the experience (having a good time, and learning you), versus where you were, and how much you’re paying.
Don’t Get Me Wrong
I love women who are career-driven, motivated, and ambitious. That being said, I also adore a woman that can wear sneakers, jeans, and throw their hair up in a knot bun to go to the movies. The same woman can go to the game and knows the rules, and players almost as good as you do. Not someone who has to get ‘glammed-up’ and go through a 3-hour caterpillar metamorphosis just to go watch the Knicks play.
I appreciate the time it takes to get ready for special occasions, or even a dinner date at a nice restaurant. I even understand going through said metamorphosis for work. Keeping up your appearance is a great quality to have, and one that most men appreciate.
However, the girl next door is someone that just knows when to say when… “baby, we don’t have time for this….” and she just throws something on, and feels just as beautiful—as she would if she was, “made-up.”
Eatin’, Chillin’, And Symmetry
Lastly, the girl next door doesn’t try and look cute when she’s eating. Taking little bits, or barely eating in front of you. “Girl you better eat…cause I know I am.” I have never held back when on a date. You need to get the full frontal of my rapaciousness.
An even more endearing quality in the girl next door is, when she can, “just be.” Meaning, she can chill and relax without the need to be in the public eye. You have some women who coin themselves as, “socialites… and I respect their hustle and grind, but they are always, on-the-go, and usually not at home. Not exactly laid back, and relaxed. To be fair, it’s OK to have a social life… and it’s OK to use social networking as a means-to-an-end. The difference is, the girl next door, knows when to turn-it-on, and when to, turn-it-off.
When it comes to symmetrical relationships, MarriageMoment says…
“There are certainly beneficial elements of symmetrical relationships. Some important areas of similarity or agreement typically translate to better marital adjustment and satisfaction. Such areas are often related to having similar backgrounds and life experiences.”
Meaning… someone who grew up, “next door…” is more likely to have a similar lifestyle, upbringing, and experiences to you, than say—someone who grew up in New York City, vs. North Dakota. Jenny from the block is more likely to show similar likes, vs Rebecca from the plains of Nebraska. This is [not] saying they can’t learn to understand you. It’s simply saying that symmetry works. She likes burgers, you like burgers. She can get dressed in 10 minutes, you can get dressed at the same time. You like anime, and so does she.
