Understanding Traditional and Conventional

Traditional dating is, whatever process or ideology you call traditional, that is passed from generation to generation. In other words, it’s the way things have always been done in the past. In order to say that something is traditional, it must be established for an extended period.

Furthermore, conventional is the opposite of traditional. It is something that is generally [expected] by people, based on common things, in specific cultures, at a specific time. In other words, to be conventional, if something is conventional for a long period, it can become a tradition.

For Instance

It’s conventional to have a birthday cake for one’s birthday in most countries, but maybe in your family, it’s traditional to eat pizza instead.

It’s conventional to eat moon cakes in China during the Mid-Autumn Festival, but maybe in some Chinese family, it’s a tradition to eat chocolate cakes.

A traditional female dater will expect certain actions from a man such as initiation of dates and phone calls. A traditional female dater would also prefer an exclusive dating experience vs dating multiple people.

A conventional dater will fall into current practices of dating. In other words, what’s being done right now. So that could mean, online dating, DM dating, dating multiple people, serial dating, etc.

More Dating Sub-Types

Selectively Traditional

This is my least favorite status. Someone who is, selectively traditional, is someone who chooses certain aspects or parts of a traditional dating/courting customs, for their own convenience.

An example would be, wanting a man to pay for the majority of the dates until they are in a relationship.

Serial Dater

Elite Daily states, the top three reasons to know if you’re a serial dater are:

They’re all about the honeymoon phase.

During this golden time-frame full of vulnerable excitement and uncontrollable nerves, the two of you are giddy to be around each other. You’re exploding with butterflies during each and every kiss, and find yourselves falling hard and fast into love.  You’ll take the fancy dinner trips together on Friday nights, and he’ll even hold the door for you.  Then, you’ll go out for drinks at adorable cocktail bars and take fun trips to destinations you’ve both dreamt to visit.  You’ll post Instagram photos of the two of you,  hand-in-hand, every chance you get.  As expected, the honeymoon phase can become addicting and serial daters are most definitely the addicts. They refuse to be single.

Serial daters hate being single.

They hate the thought of being alone, and they especially hate not having someone eagerly waiting by the phone to answer every text. Why? Because they constantly have people lined up to date them.

They’re afraid of commitment.

Serial daters are jaded and don’t believe in everlasting love.  So, they fill their time with temporary men or women, who will fill the void of a long-term relationship.

My Take

People end up dating someone who is not a great match for them because they try to match physical attraction with incompatible dating styles.  In those cases, it’s a traditional dater, matching with a conventional dater. Based on earlier information, you can see how that wouldn’t work.

Which type of dater are you?
Think back to someone you’ve dated seriously… were they the same type of dater as you?
